Michigan Governor Under Fire for Secret Hush Money Payments

Michigan Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer has attracted a barrage of criticism for how she’s responded to COVID-19 in her state.

In 2020, Whitmer repeatedly used the 1945 emergency powers law to pass one sweeping edict after the other. Finally, Michiganders got tired of this and signed a petition leading to Whitmer losing access to the emergency powers law. After this happened, Whitmer moved to use the Michigan Health and Human Services Department as a means of enforcing her orders.

However, recent settlements from the Michigan governor and the Whitmer administration at large are coming under fire, according to Breitbart News.

Controversy Surrounding the Whitmer Administration

In recent weeks, the Michigan governor has reached settlements with former officials from the Unemployment Insurance Agency and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Whitmer has remained tight-lipped about this; however, Republicans view these payments as clear hush money to silence aides from openly discussing their involvements in the Whitmer administration. This view is furthered by the reality that Whitmer’s settlements reached a collective total of more than $250,000.

It turns out that Republicans aren’t the only ones with concerns about these settlements the Michigan governor made. Michigan Democrat Rep. Laurie Pohutsky declared this month that it’s “concerning” to learn about these payments from the Whitmer administration.

Silence from the Michigan Governor

Governor Whitmer has chosen not to be candid with the public about the collective total of over $250,000 payments coming from her administration.

The governor isn’t stopping the growing attention being given to this situation especially since the beneficiaries of these payments are former Whitmer aides. Moreover, silence from the Democrat governor of Michigan comes as numerous other Democrat governors across America face criticism.

Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York is under fire for multiple sexual harassment allegations against him; meanwhile, Governor Gavin Newsom of California is facing a strong effort to recall him as state residents tire of his poor leadership.

In the weeks and months to come, Americans can expect to hear more about the settlement controversies surrounding the Whitmer administration. Time will tell whether or not the Michigan governor herself decides to get ahead of this and answer relevant questions about these payments.
