(ThePatriotWire)- Working class voters in the Latino and Hispanic community are moving away from Democrats and over to Republicans.
Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that this shift in loyalty was starting to happen. These constituents of voters could once be counted on to be heavy supporters of the Democratic Party, but that has all changed in the last two years.
According to the report published by the WSJ, 63% of Hispanic voters supported Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. That represented a drop-off of 8% from the 2016 election and then-candidate Hillary Clinton.
The Pew Research Center reported statistics that were similar to that, too. Their findings show that support for Biden from Hispanics was 7% lower in 2020 than it was for Clinton in 2016. At the same time, support for former President Donald Trump from Hispanics increased 10% from the 2016 election to the 2020 election.
The biggest leap in support came from Latino voters who don’t have a college degree, which are typically referred to as “working class.”
Many political pundits say this shift in support is because of how the parties have changed their postures since the 2016 presidential election.
Democrats have since embraced much more liberal and progressive positions on policy. This includes large spending bills geared toward social programs, loosening regulations at the borders, and using race-based curricula.
Many working-class Latino voters don’t ascribe to these policies. This group of people are also typically either Jehovah’s Witnesses or Catholics, according to the Peterson Institute.
The WSJ report quoted Ally Magalhaes, a doctor who was born in Brazil and now lives in Las Vegas. She said:
“The Republican Party is the one that represents that strongly, and that’s who we are going to be sticking with if the Democratic Party continues to impose their progressive agenda.”
This big shift in support is happening a lot in Nevada, which has 18.7% of its total population being Latino. The state overall has voted for a Democrat in every presidential election since 2008. Yet, this year’s midterm election for Senate there is a “tossup,” according to the Cook Political Report.
This is even more surprising considering the Democrat running for the Senate seat is the first-ever Latina who was elected to represent Nevada — Catherine Cortez Masto. She’s slightly behind in polls to Republican candidate Adam Laxalt, who is a white male.
Big shifts among Latino voters have occurred as well in Texas and Florida. There, Hispanic voters in Texas and Cuban-American voters in Florida have increasingly shifted over the GOP.
Polling firm Bendixen & Amadi reported that Cuban-Americans voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2020, by a count of 62% to 36%.
This has been a problem for the Democratic Party over the last couple of years, but it’s proving to be a major problem for liberals going forward. Hispanics used to be a group of voters Democrats could count on at the polls. Now, they can all but count on them not supporting their progressive policies.
