
The person responsible for Sunday’s fatal shooting at a block party on Muncie’s southeast side has been apprehended by police.
The Delaware County Jail has John Lamar Vance, 36, in custody on a $55,000 bail.
At a vigil on Tuesday night, Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour announced Vance’s arrest.
Several relatives of Joseph Bonner, the 30-year-old victim of Sunday’s shooting, were in the audience. Sunday night’s shooting at the block party included Bonner’s mother and Addie Wilkins, who was also there.
Ridenour announced the news from the Berea Church pulpit on August 1, 2023, saying that on August 1, 2023, at approximately 4:40 p.m., the Muncie Police Department arrested John Vance in connection with the shooting on July 30, 2023.
One person was killed, and at least 19 people were wounded early Sunday morning after a “mass shooting” during an outdoor neighborhood party in Muncie, Indiana.
At around 1:14 a.m., someone called 911 to report numerous shooting victims. According to the first report, there was reportedly a “large party” here.
There was no ongoing danger to the community, according to a police statement, and “multiple” people were hurt, some of them seriously.
In a news statement, the City of Muncie said that many agencies were called in to help because of the large number of casualties and the seriousness of the situation.
Some of those who helped were police officers from the nearby city of Eaton. Chief Jay Turner of the Eaton Police Department described the event as a “mass shooting.”
Muncie’s Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital told The Associated Press that 19 people were treated for injuries related to the shooting at the hospital’s emergency department and that more than a dozen were still in stabilized condition on Sunday morning.
Several injured were severely ill and had to be airlifted to different hospitals.
According to reports, Delaware County Coroner Gavin Greene has named the deceased 30-year-old Joseph E. Bonner III.
