(ThePatriotWire)- Bill de Blasio, a former mayor of New York City, has a new position teaching public health at Harvard University.
This fall, the former mayor of New York City will join the Harvard faculty as a visiting fellow at the Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics and as a Senior Leadership Fellow at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He will provide lectures at the School of Public Health on public health leadership and participate in a number of events at the Institute of Politics.
De Blasio was introduced by the two institutions separately on Wednesday.
Dean Michelle A. Williams told the Associated Press they are delighted to welcome Mayor de Blasio and former Boston Mayor Kim Janey to campus as Menschel Senior Leadership Fellows.
The Dean told students who want to lead in other areas and those who want to run for public office that they would find their ideas and guidance to be of great value.
The School of Public Health praised de Blasio’s leadership throughout the COVID pandemic and during his career as mayor of the largest city in the United States in its announcement.
According to the announcement, he guided New York through the COVID-19 pandemic, transforming what was once a global epicenter into the safest city in the country. The school also praised de Blasio’s accomplishments on matters aside from COVID, such as his drive to make universal access to early childhood education in the city, his work on affordable housing initiatives and his strategy to combat homelessness, his activism and push for a $15 per hour minimum wage citywide, and his passage of the Climate Mobilization Act, also known as the NYC Green New Deal, and initiatives to make the city carbon-neutral by 2050.
The New York Times reported that De Blasio will instruct an eight-week leadership school that focuses on overcoming significant obstacles in the field of public health. Additionally, he will speak at a seminar, host office hours, and interact with faculty and students.
Harvard University’s Institute of Politics has appointed Bill de Blasio to its board of trustees. Setti Warren, the director of the institute, said De Blasio’s decades of experience would provide invaluable insight to students and the Harvard community.
De Blasio tweeted that he is “very hopeful” about the generation of activists and leaders emerging.
