H.R. McMaster, the former national security advisor under Trump, is sounding the alarm on the relationship between the United States and China, according to The Daily Wire. He claimed that this relationship is worse than that between the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
His comment came while appearing on CBS News’ “Face The Nation” Sunday with Margaret Brennan. He noted the aggressive behavior of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and their goal of toppling the U.S. as the world’s superpower. Referring to their military exercises he said that they are laying a claim to the South China Sea and want exclusive primacy of the Indo-Pacific region.
Brennan asked McMaster about China’s spying facilities in Cuba to which he replied that relations between the U.S. and China can improve if they stop their aggression toward the U.S. and other countries. He observed that the CCP talks about a “community of common destiny for all mankind,” but said that he would not opt-in for that program with them in charge.
When discussing Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s meeting with top Beijing officials, McMaster said that the U.S. needs to stop making concessions, claiming that this will not alleviate China’s aggression. Blinken trip marked the first time in five years that the secretary of state visited China’s capital.
While both sides reportedly “recognized the need to work to stabilize” their relationship, there was “no immediate progress” on military communication. China recently rejected a meeting between Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu.
During his remarks, Blinken said that the U.S. position on Taiwan has not changed and reaffirmed the “One China” policy. Xi claimed that China respects the interests of the U.S., but made clear that the U.S. must respond in kind and respect its rights and interests.
