(ThePatriotWire)- Last week during his State of the Union address, President Biden doubled down on his assault weapons ban, pleading with Congress to “do something” about gun violence.
In his prepared remarks, Biden recognized Brandon Tsay, the man credited for preventing the shooter in the Lunar New Year celebration in California from carrying out further attacks.
In recounting the story, Biden said that when confronted by the gunman, Tsay “found the courage to act and wrestled the semi-automatic pistol away from the gunman.” Biden said Tsay “saved lives” and added that it was “time we do the same as well. Ban assault weapons now.”
In pressing for a renewed assault weapons ban, the president falsely claimed that during the previous ban from 1994 to 2004, the number of mass shootings in the US dropped. However, data recorded during the previous ban showed that mass shootings increased at that time, according to The Federalist.
The president said he would continue his push for stricter gun control measures despite signing into law last year the country’s first new gun control bill in decades.
In addition to calling for Congress to pass an assault weapons ban, the president also pushed for background checks and a measure to require safe gun storage.
Biden also exploited the death of Tyre Nichols to call for police reform legislation.
Nichols, a 29-year-old black man, died in early January just days after being beaten by Memphis police officers.
The five black officers involved in the incident were fired on January 20 and were later charged with second-degree murder, two counts of official misconduct, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one count of official oppression, and one count of aggravated assault.
Biden claimed that he never had to have “the talk” with his children about how to minimize the dangers if they were stopped by the police, implying that white people have no fear of police misconduct.
He demanded that Congress “finish the job” of police reform.
